Lee Haskins and Ryan Burnett fight Saturday at the Odyssey Arena for the IBF World bantamweight title on AWE.
Lee Haskins enters this fight with a 34-3 record that includes 14 knockouts. Haskins has won his last eight fights, and he’s coming off a September win over Stuart Hall. Haskins will be defending his belt for a third straight fight and hopes to continue making a case as the best boxer in the bantamweight division. Haskins is a 5’5” southpaw with a 66 inch reach and is a quality defensive fighter who relies on counter punches and waiting for his opponent to make a mistake. Haskins doesn't have much punching power, but he does just enough to win rounds and can land a haymaker if he catches you sleeping. The obvious concern with Haskins is his questionable chin, as he has been knocked out in all three of his losses. This will be Burnett’s first fight in Ireland.
Ryan Burnett enters this fight with a 16-0 record that includes nine knockouts. This will be Burnett’s fifth fight since 2016, and he’s coming off a February win over Joseafat Reyes. Burnett is a soon to be 25-year-old who has been making some noise in the UK and has a chance to take his career to the next level here. Burnett is a smart boxer who relies on his defense and taking what his opponent gives him. Burnett doesn't have a ton of power and hasn't produced a knockout since his 2015 win over Robert Kanalas, but he counters well and does a good job of avoiding the power shots. The concern with Burnett is his lack of competition, as Ryan Farrag is the only respectable name he's faced up to this point. This will be Burnett’s fifth fight in Ireland, his birthplace.
This is an interesting fight between two guys who are defensive minded and like to rely on their opponents offense to dictate what they're going to do. In most cases, Burnett is far too passive and that can hurt him in some rounds. Overall, Haskins is the far more experienced boxer and has a more trustworthy offense. If Haskins closes off the ring and gets Burnett against the ropes, he's going to go to work and that's where he’ll win the key rounds. Burnett hasn't proven himself yet against a guy of Haskins’ caliber and his limited offensive attack will likely be his downfall.
Burnett will have the crowd advantage, but Haskins wins this fight.
