'... Last Son of Krypton started out as atreatment for a movie -- the Superman movie that I was trying toconvince DC Comics needed to be made as far back as 1974. When MarioPuzo showed up at the office one day to tell me he'd gotten anassignment to write a Superman movie and would I spend a couple ofdays with him telling him who the character was, I was thrilled anddisappointed. I spent two days with Puzo, telling stories and smokingenormous cigars, and had a fine time. Then I took my ignored littlefilm treatment upstairs to Warner Books where a senior editor said goahead and write a novel out of it. I did, and through a series ofunlikely events, the novel was published the same day as the movie wasreleased, and became a bestseller.
'It is an independent original storyunrelated to the first Superman movie with which it was released andmarketed, and the only one of nine publishing products that came outwith that film to make any headway in the marketplace at all.

'Warner Books took it out of circulation sometime ago,going so far as to destroy several hundred thousand warehoused copies,I am told.
'The book was released when I lived in New Hampshire, the daySuperman:The Movie was released. I got a frantic phone call that weekfrom the guy who was president of DC Comics saying that AlexanderSalkind -- the producer of the movie -- wanted to sue me. Apparentlysomeone had finally read him the book or something, and he thoughtthere were too many incidents in common with the movie. I said that Ihad not seen the movie or read the script, but that I had handed in mymanuscript a full year before Mario Puzo handed in his script, andowing to my conversations with Puzo. I told this guy where to look forproof of that, and said maybe I should sue Salkind.
'Got a phone call from the guy at DC the next day saying, 'Salkindsays, 'Just kidding.' And that was the last I heard about it.
'The book pretty much invented the super-hero novel, a sub-genre offantasy/science fiction books that clutters up bookstore shelf spacewith alarming success lately. Until this year, I haven't contributedto the field since 1981. Currently I'm finishing up a new bookin that sub-genre and just finalized an agreement this past week to writeanother one before the end of 1996.'

A new Superman movie is in development. Acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing a script for Warner Bros with JJ Abrams producing through his company Bad Robot Productions. According to reports, the hunt for an actor has not begun. And we do not know if Henry Cavill will ever return in the red cape but sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that Coates’ movie is being set up for a black Superman. If that is true, then this will be the first black Superman in live-action.
Though the Last Son of Krypton is almost always depicted as a white alien called Clarke Kent, there have been variants like Calvin Ellis in DC Comics.
For those who do not know, Calvin Ellis is a black Superman outside the primary DC continuity (also called the DC Universe). Like Clarke Kent, he is originally a Kryptonian and was sent to Earth to escape Krypton’s destruction.

He was then raised by an American couple as their son. But he differs from Clarke Kent in that he is also the President of the United States, while Clarke is a journalist with the fictional newspaper Daily Planet in the (fictional) city of Metropolis. The character was intentionally modelled over Barack Obama.

As per THR, Michael B. Jordan, best known for playing Erik Killmonger in Black Panther, tried to develop a Black Superman movie in 2019 but was unsuccessful. He had earlier expressed interest in the character. In 2019, he had told Oprah Winfrey on her show, “It’s tough. I hate being a businessman and understanding both sides of the situation. There is a huge upside to it, but being under that microscope, being picked apart and compared to so many different versions of Superman… I would rather do something original. I’ll be Calvin Ellis.”
